Magnificent Medicean church

Basilica of San Lorenzo

Why locals love it

One of the first buildings constructed in the new Renaissance style, this famous church is in the heart of the lively San Lorenzo district. Locals love it because it's a major point of pride: it's a prime example of Filippo Brunelleschi's signature architectural stylings, and the New Sacristy boasts two Medici tombs completed by Michelangelo.

Why you should visit it

Beyond Brunelleschi and Michelangelo, you'll find work by Rosso Fiorentino, Donatello, Fra Filippo Lippi, and more. The Biblioteca Laurenziana is also incredible and is one of the basilica's most distinct assets. This historic library was largely constructed to convince the world to see the Medici family as intellectually poised "society" types.
