Summer favorite

Why locals love it

Florence's summer heat and crowds can get pretty overwhelming. With no real "beach" in sight, locals made one of their own with this little stretch of Arno shore. The Arno doesn't exactly sparkle like the Pacific Ocean or anything, but people love to hang out here to soak up the sun, play beach volleyball, or grab drinks (and yummy food!)

Why you should visit it

This is a fun, relaxing place to beat the heat, mingle with locals and escape from the packed piazzas and streets around Florence's main attractions. Although admittedly a little weird—and you definitely don't want to go swimming in the Arno—it's a fun and semi-central, inexpensive spot to enjoy a refreshing summer cocktail outdoors.

Special tip

June 24 is the feast day of San Giovanni, Florence's patron saint, and there's a spectacular fireworks show you can watch from here—but arrive EARLY!
