San Marco Museum

Why locals love it

The space now houses some of the most iconic works by Fra Angelico, who was once a San Marco friar (many are housed in a portion of the complex that was formerly one of the world's first public libraries). Fra Angelico's frescoes are some of the complex's main highlights, particularly his world-famous Annunciation.

Why you should visit it

If you want to understand the Medici family story and you're looking for a starting point, San Marco is it. Before the family was so dizzingly dominant, this was their family church. It's home to some of Florence's finest frescoes, and you can also peer in to the friars' private cells, which gives a real sense of what monastic life was like.
