Between Florence and Arezzo, along the Arno river, you can admire an incredible erosive phenomenon known as the Balze of Valdarno.
It's an outstanding area where the erosion has produced spectacular geological formations composed of layers of clay, sand, and gravel. Among natural cathedrals, fascinating in their beautiful colours ranging from grey-blue to ochre-orange, visitors can enjoy enchanting views of villages, vineyards, and olive groves.
The Balze is a place out of the ordinary, an entrancing beauty.
Today it’s still possible to observe the area much as it was when Leonardo discovered it, experiencing the same sensations. It’s most definitely a photograph you’ll want to take.
The meeting point is the San Giovanni Valdarno train station. You can get a direct 30-minute train from the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence. You’ll return to Florence by train.
