Longest Seaside Walk on the West Coast

Galway Promenade

Why locals love it

Walking the prom is a long held tradition to local Galwegians and visitors alike. Starting in the Claddagh, close to the city centre, this 2 kilometre (1.24 miles) walk takes you on a scenic route to the seaside 'centre' of Galway, Salthill. The view is wonderful and on a clear day you can see the Burren in Co. Clare.

Why you should visit it

On a clear day, there's nothing better than a walk on the prom. Built in the 19th century, it's popular with runners, dog walkers and kids cycling, skating or scootering. A long held tradition is to 'kick the wall' at Blackrock Diving Tower, the end of the prom. Be warned: the wind comes in off the Atlantic at a rate of knots and it can get chilly.

Special tip

Take picnic & eat on the beach, or the park in the summer. In bad weather (the summer!), take refuge in a local cafe. Be brave and dive off Blackrock.
