Why locals love it

This is identified as world heritage site by UNESCO and it is a palace built in the 19th century and despite it being damaged it is worth seeing. Even after so many years it gives you an idea of how rulers in those days were living and had planned lot of things we plan for today.

Why you should visit it

The underground headquarters of Gen. Giap during what the Vietnamese call the "American War" was fascinating. If you watched the PBS documentaries, you'll recognize the room. The excavation is ongoing, and you can see what the archaeologists are doing, simply fascinating. Don't miss this one!

Special tip

A good insight into the scale and sophistication of Vietnamese culture and history, there is still a lot of excavation going on but the visitor can go

The old citadel is well worth a visit if you are a history and cultural buff. There is an entrance fee into this site. We spent a whole afternoon here and enjoyed going through the different areas and buildings. Everything is well signposted in English and Vietnamese. The main entrance at the historical gate is impressive. It leads to an archaeological dig showing the different dynasties’ palace layouts. The different French colonial style buildings house the different artifacts and stories of the different dynasties before leading you to the story of the Vietnam war. Gardens in the area are immaculate and well trimmed. Remember to visit the famous D67 underground bunker room where the war campaign was planned and strategized. Gives you an appreciation of Vietnam’s historical and modern day heritage and a glimpse into the spirit of its people’s fight for independence.
