Kaunissaari Island is a popular outdoor and camping island located about 22 km east of Helsinki in the Sipoo archipelago, almost on the high seas. For centuries, the island has been a pasture for livestock, home to a wind-powered sawmill and inhabited by fishing families for many generations. Nowadays the island is apart of Helsinki's Archipelago.
Now all 100 hectares of the island are used for recreation by the people of Helsinki. It combines the protection and peace of the inner archipelago with the brutality and severity of the outer archipelago. The approximately 4 km long nature trail tells the history and nature of the island, it is not fully suitable for the disabled.
