Please note that you can also use the HSL mobile ticket app as mentioned under the link previously provided by Tiina (just click the "Mobile ticket" link there) Of course it require an Internet connection and a payment card, but if you have those, it is quite convenient. Generally, if in good health, downtown Helsinki rarely requires public transport and is quite walkable. Of course, if traveling (and recommended) to other areas such as Kallio or even further, then you may prefer to use the excellent public transport system. Please also note that tickets are also sold by R-Kioski (small shops found pretty much everywhere), which are often a bit more convenient. Please also note that you cannot buy tickets from drivers, except on buses, but then it is more expensive, so use either day ticket or mobile app for the best experience. Have fun!

If you buy the ticket from a machine or at the counter, it starts only from the first use. Tickets can also be bought from the driver and those tickets start right away.

You may buy the tickets also from kioska and automats are elsewhere tthan just at station. I wouls recommend the 24 hour ticket for all public transportation, 9 euros and can be buyed from kiosks. All tickets activates when start to use them in the publuc vessels, not before that. So you may buy today and start to use tomorrow!
