Hey locals, I am heading to Helsinki for three days. It would be nice to find a spot to exprlore the finnish sauna and ice swimming culture. Many thanks in advance! :)

This is a tough one. I can assure you, there is probably no secret spot like that. You see the ice can be over a foot wide and the physical work of: 1) drilling a hole in the ice 2) sawing the ice 10-50+ cm in width for at least 4 meters in length even to get a square-meter hole to dip in, and 3) getting rid of the icemass in the center - this can take hours and needs special equipment and expertise skill. After that the hole needs to be reopened daily. Miss a day or two, and the work has to be completely redone, as the hole freezes shut and the new ice widens.

End of the dystopic part.

I strongly recommend Kuusijärvi lake and skiing area in Vantaa. They have a rarity in Finland - a public smoke sauna. The area can be reached by a local bus coming from the Cenral Helsinki. Regional ticket for the bus ride is like six euros max. The smoke sauna would be cheap as well, as it is managed by the city of Vantaa council, I am not sure, but expect it to be around 10 euros max. However if the weather is good and it's weekend, there is a limited amount of seats in the smoke sauna. They do have electrical saunas as well though. The ice hole is managed daily and kept open for swimmers.

I definitely recommend Kulttuurisauna (kulttuurisauna.fi) in Merihaka very close to city centre. It is a public sauna open on Wed-Sun evenings. The ticket is 15 eur (12 for students etc.). The have ice swimming possibility and the place is so nice with so much attention paid on every visual detail. Just note that they don't take groups so you can only go with one or two friends. This way it is very peaceful place and not a party sauna.

Not secret but a popular and very alternative since is the maybe the only free "public" sauna in the city and just near the sea; Sompasauna check that one and have fun

Unfortunately I don't know any secret spots but most common places near city center are Löyly (amazing design sauna, maybe a bit "luxury" version), Allas Sea Pool (they also have heated pool, nice place to do swimming as an exercise) and Kulttuurisauna (most "beaten" track). These are from 10 to 19 euros. Then there's nice morning sauna in Uunisaari for 5 euros from 7 to 10 am on weekdays and a bit more expensive during weekend but including also jacuzzi. Uunisaari is an island near Kaivopuisto which you can only acces by boat during summer but winter it's accessible with bridge. Atm sea around Uunisaari (actually almost all places around helsinki) is also frozen so it's safe to walk on it! For most authentic ice swimming I would recommend Uunisaari :) They also have cute cafe where you can get "aamupuuro", traditional Finnish breakfast oatmeal after sauna and swimming :) And Sompasauna might also have ice swimming possibility but I'm not sure about it, you can ask it in this group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sompasauna/

Try to look if they have an "avanto" Sompasauna near Kalasatama. It might be the most secret spot where to take a dip in the water in Helsinki. It's a sauna run by the people who use it, so read the instructions from the web page well! Bathing and swimming is done in your own responcibility, since it's a dyi sauna. And, remember to always have a friend with you when going ice swimming and also, don't dip your head under water. Have a nice trip! www.sompasauna.fi

Don't know about secrets, there might be thousands, that I guess you'll have to have someone take you to their own. But easy spots in the city are Allas Sea Pool and Löyly. If you're up to a bit of travelling, Kuusijärvi is nice. I guess there are thousands of spots, these are just a couple that come to my mind now. In Nuuksio it might be possible to find something.. Or be frozen til summer 😉 it's pretty cold at the moment.

I’d recommend a place called kuusijärvi even though it actually is located in Vantaa but totally worth the visit.
