Why locals love it

It's a lovely place to go to get out of the city - even though it's just ten minutes from the centre. Really romantic, no matter the season, but in winter time you really have to rug up. The wind - like the sea - is truly icy.

Why you should visit it

What remains of this "Finnish fortress" is accessible by public ferry from Kauppatori (the market square). This UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 1700's as Finland (and Sweden's) easternmost defences, is now a beautiful and eerie spot for a windswept picnic.

Special tip

The museum on the island will tell you about the fascinating history and present day role of these islands.

Suomenlinna is only a short ferry ride away from Helsinki city centre. Visitors can use the same travelling ticket, as the ones for buses, trams, metros and trains. This small island is a perfect half-day getaway from the city life. You will experience beautiful cobblestoned path, museums, cafes and restaurants on this sea-fortress island. The best time to visit is during summer, but this place looks beautiful in pretty much all seasons.

Beautiful place to spend a sunny day at. Great for tourists since it also works with the day card of regular public transportation, which makes getting there really cheap.

Lovely when the weather is sunny & mild. Take the Metro Ferry from the Kauppatori stop.
