It's a lovely place to go to get out of the city - even though it's just ten minutes from the centre. Really romantic, no matter the season, but in winter time you really have to rug up. The wind - like the sea - is truly icy.
What remains of this "Finnish fortress" is accessible by public ferry from Kauppatori (the market square). This UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 1700's as Finland (and Sweden's) easternmost defences, is now a beautiful and eerie spot for a windswept picnic.
