No frills eating

Unicafe

Why locals love it

This university owned cafeteria ensures that the youthful student population of Helsinki can keep some meat on their bones even through the harsh winters. They only discriminate the non-students to the tune of a few euros. Unicafe offers large servings of hot food, a salad buffet and bread for around €6, even without a Finnish student card.

Why you should visit it

If you want to feel like you’re back to school then jump in the queue, tray in hand and pick up your feed - don’t forget your compulsory glass of Finnish milk or buttermilk, you need calcium, you know. The menu is actually usually rather good and even has an extra tasty option that costs a little more.

Special tip

The cooked smoked salmon steaks in pesto is worth the couple of euros extra. And there’s always a vege option too.
