A town was founded in 1550 near the rapids at the mouth of the Vantaa River called Helsinge fors, Helsinginkoski. The name of the city became Helsingfors, in the mouth of the people Helsing. The city, founded by King Gustav Vaasa of Sweden, gradually began to grow around the rapids, until its center was moved to the present-day Vironniemi by Brahe.

Vanhankaupunginkoski is not only a place in Helsinki that is unique in terms of cultural history and natural values. The rapids are 200 meters long and the drop is 6 meters. It is popular with lure and fly fishermen as it has a working fishing route. Part of the rapids are protected from fishing.
The rapids descend into the sea from two streams, between which is the Island Kuninkaankartano, where the Museum of Technology is located.
