Piponus' Cabin Ruins

Why locals love it

The ruins of Piponius' cabin are related to the early days of the golden history of Saariselkä, 1871. Geometry student Johan Albert Piponius from Alavieska was the first ruler of Saariselkä's golden history, and the owner of the cabin. In a statement very close to what is now Santa's Hotel Tunturi, he said he had found 329g of gold.

Why you should visit it

Piponius was neither the first nor the last gold digger in the River Luttojoki. The cabin has since been used by several gold miners. There is an information board on the history of the ruins.
