Built in 1902, the mine is an interesting place to visit along the Saariselkä day hiking trail. The area was built by Prospektor Mining Company, for gold exploration. The office of the Prospektor was the first building in the Saariselkä area to be destroyed during World War II.
You can visit the Prospektor Mine on a short day trip. In the early years of the 20th century, Henry Kerkelä built two houses and two outbuildings near Hangasoja, near the Paukkula parking lot. Houses were abandoned by Kerkelä in 1925. Currently, the grounds of the cabins and the cellar are visible in the field.
