Tomb finds made in Tanhua Mukkala once brought to life an old folk tale of the last witches in Sodankylä. However, the graves of Mukkala are not the last resting places of the witches of this folk tale, although there are also graves of witches among them. The corpses were buried in small cemeteries with no visible visible signs on the ground.
Sámi burials older than the 17th century are not known in Finland. Usually the Sámi placed their deceased in a shallow pit. The deceased was in full dress and was provided with necessities and jewelry. Sometimes objects related to the witch drum, such as stiffeners, or wand drum sticks, have also been found in the graves.
The first information about the Mukkala cemetery dates back to 1905. Excavations on site are prohibited. Archaeological excavations has been made.
