Salla's Border Station connects Finland and the European Union with Russia. It forms a significant logistical connection for business and tourism to the Arctic Ocean and the Northeast Passage, as well as to the Russian and Far Eastern railway network.
For the municipality of Salla, the opening of the border has meant the strengthening of co-operation in neighboring areas, the facilitation of citizens' interaction and the increased number of Russian customers in local trade, service and accommodation establishments. The border crossing point was opened in 2002.
The Kola region is home to about a million people and has strong industrial concentrations.
