Sokli

Why locals love it

The Sokli phosphate deposit is located in Savukoski in Eastern Lapland. The significant deposit was discovered in 1967 and has been studied ever since. Phosphorus in phosphate ore is a vital nutrient for plants and animals and is therefore one of the main nutrients in fertilizers.

Why you should visit it

Sokli's mining rights were transferred to Yara in 2007, when the company began studies and permitting processes aimed at opening the Sokli phosphate mine. The studies were suspended in 2015 for reasons of profitability, but the company has restarted the technical and financial studies of the mining project.

Special tip

Yara will make a decision on the continuation of the mining project once the feasibility studies have been completed in 2021.
