The landscape of Western Lapland is dominated by the Pallas – Yllästunturi National Park. The backbone of Finland's third largest national park is a mountain chain more than 100 kilometers long, surrounded by natural forests and swamps. Southern and northern species meet in the fells and forests. In the same areas, the old Peräpohja agricultural culture was once changed to a northern reindeer husbandry culture.

The clean and beautiful nature of the national park as well as the varied terrain offer excellent opportunities for skiing and other snow hiking. Visitors to the national park are served by an extensive network of trails, rest areas and desert huts, as well as the unique chain of Metsähallitus' three nature centers (Äkäslompolo, Pallas and Hetta). Hiking in the national park is litter-free.
