Why locals love it
The village of Kaukonen is located at the Fell Lapland, in Kittilä. Kaukonen has been an old Sámi residence. In the village of Kaukonen and Alakylä, cattle buildings typical of the northernmost part of Finland, summer barns with pyramid roofs, have been preserved and restored.
Why you should visit it
In the middle of the 17th century, the village has been one of the largest agricultural areas, a marketplace, a district and a transport hub, later the administrative center of Kittilä. The remote small villages of Kittilä, which were created on the shores of former wilderness lakes, have exceptionally survived the destruction of the Lapland War.
