Pajala is known as the home of Lars Levi Laestadius. Laestadius was not only a spiritualist and a martyr, but also a scientist, a botanist, a folklore collector, a philosopher and a leader. Laestadius has been described as a prophet of Lapland. Laestadius converted the people around Lapland Region into Lestadianism, that is a sect of Christianity.
Laestadius parsonage is now located in the center of Pajala. It is a home of a fearless explorer that wandered around the Lapland region, mapping the area and exploring the nature and livelihood of the people. Some original goods are still on display. Laestadius lived and worked in/from Pajala until his death in winter 1861.
