Northern River Torniojoki Valley includes areas Kolari/Muonio from Finnish side as well Norrbotten/Swedish Lapland. The river that separates the countries is like a “line drawn in water”. The common population base and culture are inherited from a time when Finland was part of Sweden. Sweden and Russia have alternately dominated the Finland.
On both sides of the border, in addition to the main languages, there is also a unique Meänkieli language, influenced by Swedish and Finnish, which is one of the minority languages in Sweden. The valley is a rich and lively cultural heritage site with a lot to see and experience for tourists from both countries.
