The Auschwitz-Birkenau complex is one of the most notorious concentration camps in the world. Approximately 2.5 million prisoners of war from all over Europe were deported to the camp during its five inglorious years of operation, and an estimated 1.5 million people were killed there as part of the Nazi genocide of World War II.
In 1979, Auschwitz-Birkenau was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year, millions of visitors from all over the world walk through the camp’s gate that bears the deceptive slogan ‘arbeit macht frei’ (work sets one free).
This tour includes a visit to Auschwitz I (the administrative centre) and Auschwitz II-Birkenau (designed and constructed as an extermination facility). The entire complex comprises approximately 150 buildings and 300 ruins. The original roads, fences, watchtowers and railway ramps have also been preserved.
