Wieliczka Salt Mine Guided Tour from Krakow

Welcome to the salt city! The UNESCO-listed Wieliczka Salt Mine is among Poland’s most precious and fascinating sights. Visit several vast chambers, admire magical underground lakes, and see impressive artworks carved out of salt on an unforgettable tour 135 metres below the mine’s surface.
Duration 4.5 hours
Private tour pricing from 47 EUR per person
Group tour available in English
We used Discover Krakow Tours, booked by our hotel, for tours of Auschwitz and Wieliczka Salt Mine. I would recommend this group. The tour was efficiently organized and the guides and drivers kind and courteous. Both the attractions we visited require private guides from the museum and salt mine so the Discover Cracow guides mainly get you from your hotel to the site. We did not try any of their other tours but I think they would be good.

Highlights

Explore vast underground galleries and chambers

Description

The Wieliczka Salt Mine was once one of the biggest and most profitable "white gold" mines in the world.

The first tourist trail inside this underground labyrinth was established at the turn of the 19th century. A couple of centuries later, in 1978, the mine was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Now the largest mining museum in the world, it features an extensive collection of unique equipment that reflects the development of mining techniques from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The underground trail leads through numerous drifts, galleries, and chambers where traces of mining activity and sacred artworks depicting the mine’s history have been preserved. Additionally, the mine’s microclimate is beneficial to visitors who suffer from asthma and allergies.

At the beginning of the tour, we’ll descend the steps into the mine to a depth of 64 metres. We’ll then explore a number of chambers, passing impressive monuments carved out of salt and magical underground lakes. The tour finishes 135 metres below ground. We’ll return to the surface by elevator.

My wife and I took 2 tours with this company last week. The first was the Auschwitz and Birkenhau Tour. We were well looked after by the Discover Tour guide and driver. When we got to Auschwitz we were handed over to one of their tour guides. I believe her name was Anna. She looked after us for the Auschwitz and Birkenhau part. She was a very good tour guide who spoke good English. She had a passion in what she was telling us and was very emotional with it. She was very knowledgeable about the 2 sights and was not following a script like some tour guide do. The next day we went with Discover Cracow to the Salt Mine and once again we were well looked after. The company tour guide took us through the Salt Mine with one of the Salt Mine guides and once again we were provided with detailed account of the history of the mine. Both the Auschwitz and Salt Mine tour are well worth doing whist in Krakow and in my opinion Discover Cracow is a good company to do it with.
We did the Salt mines tour in the afternoon, which was fantastic experience, lots of steps down, so people with walking problems would struggle. Dont worry you get the lift for your return to the surface. We were picked up from the hotel and dropped off at the end of the day.
