The North Kuusamo border church was originally located in Paanajärvi, about 40 km east of Käylä. Lake Paanajärvi and its churches were at the foot of the wars and finally, after peace came to the Soviet Union in 1945. After the wars, North Kuusamo needed a place for a new frontier church. It was finally decided to build the church in Käylä village.
The new frontier church was designed by architect Olli Vahtera. It was inaugurated in 1958. Two watches donated by Umeå people. Next to the church is a memorial to the deceased buried in the Paanajärvi cemetery behind the eastern border.
