Why locals love it

Located in the southern part of Kuusamo, Julma-Ölkky is one of Finland's largest and most unique canyon lakes. Ölkky - is an old Lappish word and means - a gorges. The canyon is 3 km long and the canyon walls in some places are over 50 meters high, the depth of the lake is also nearly 50 meters.

 

Why you should visit it

At he north end of the lake on the eastern shore is a vaulted crack in the bedrock, named as Pirunkirkko (Devil's Church). According to folklore, the Devil lived in this crack. There are several streams on the eastern slope of the lake, one of which is called the Rainbow spring because of the water-borne color play.

Special tip

The rock bank in the eastern shore of the lake there's a Stone Age Rock Painting of Hossa which is well preserved and tells the story of early men.
