Planning a trip to Ukraine in April 2018

Hi, I'm planning to take a trip to visit Ukraine. I am from Asia. As an Asian travelling alone in Ukraine is it safe? And where is the best area to stay or rent an apartment? Preferably somewhere close to happening and "in" hangouts and places. Is April a good time to travel there, in terms of weather condition.

Hi Joel! I assume you're coming to Kyiv? It's generally a safe place, just like the rest of Ukraine. Violent crime is rare. I would refrain from walking alone in more remote areas of the city, especially after dark, but that's the rule of thumb wherever you're going. Consider staying in Podil: it's historic, but less touristy than all those spots around the central square, plus it has some good bars and places to eat. Never felt unsafe there either. As for your question about April, I would say late April - May is the best time to visit. It's already warm and you can catch some blossoming trees, etc. This is no California, so there's still a chance you'll arrive in a spell of chilly or raining weather, but nothing too rough. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks Alice. Will most definitely keep that in mind. I might wanna take train trips to Lviv and Odessa. Heard they're beautiful there too.

Yeah, those two have their own charm. Trains in Ukraine are quite an experience too :D

My question on trains. It's a bit confusing from the train booking website. If I were to book the 1st class cabin would that room be solely for me alone or do I have to share the room? What would you recommend? I mean I'll be travelling alone and don't want the hassle of worrying about my luggage when during stops I could go down the stations to buy local delights and drinks.

There's so many types of trains. I believe in Ukraine you do have High Speed Rails. I've seen videos of it and possibly I would love to take on my return trip to Kyiv from Lviv or Odessa. From Kyiv to Lviv or Odessa, I'd probably take the longer travel time to soak up the scenery and the experience. What would you suggest the best option?

I think those slower, older trains are typically overnight, so you wouldn't see much of the scenery. It can be an "exotic" experience if you've never been to trains like that, but personally I'd take the high speed one (even in a 1st class cabin you'd be sleeping in a stuffy compartment with a stranger across the aisle).

Hello Joel! Well, Kyiv is not the best place to travel to, and i just explained in my blog why: (https://awesomekyiv.com/2017/12/06/10-reasons-why-you-should-never-visit-kyiv/ ) - hope you will have fun reading it.

if you still decide to come, then staying in the areas like Maidan, Zoloti Vorota, Khreshchatik are pretty good places with many things happening.

Podil is a nice area with many bars. Try airbnb. For hi places, would you try a hostel for a day or two?

April is a very good month to travel (but May is better, as it is warmer)
