Portuguese cuisine is very diversified and very good, however may be difficult to explain what each dish consists of.
So, don't be scared and just try portuguese cuisine, you won't regret. You can try heavy dishes like Feijoada (beans, meat and sausages), Cozido à Portuguesa (meat, potatoes, white beans and usually there is soup). Speaking of soup, try Caldo Verde (more typical from North, but it's good and simple). Eat it with a bit of chouriço and corn bread.
Now speaking in fish and seafood: Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (Clams) (you will eat a bunch of bread, because the sauce is fantastic); Bacalhau à Brás (very simple and easy to do codfish dish (codfish, potatoes and eggs)). Of course you can't forget the sardines in Summer, with salad and potatoes or simply inside the bread.
And for dessert: Pastés de Belém (warm, full of cinammon and powder sugar) and by the way, it's mandatory to eat two (at least).
If you want portuguese "fast food", eat a Bifana (pork meat) or Prego (cow meat).
And there is much more...all good things
