One of the historical and more typical neighborhoods in Lisbon, with a diversity that makes it unique. During the day, is like a village where everybody knows each other and at night turns into a cosmopolitan and bohemian environment. It was built in late 16th century and it is still possible to find secular houses and traditional commerce.
Why you should visit it
Till the 70’s and 80’s, it was where most of the press was located, that can be seen in the street names like Diário de Notícias’s Street and Século’s Street, that are newspapers’ names. Since the 80’s has become known as one of the areas to go out at night, with numerous bars, restaurants and fado houses.
Don’t forget to visit Bairro Alto during the day, there are alternative commercial spaces, multi-brand stores, workshops, tattoo and piercing shops.
