This is the second part of my previous message:

The decline of this empire may have started with the inquisition. The death of King Sebastian in north Africa, without leaving heirs to the throne, left the door open to the Spanish. So we had 3 Spanish Kings. We recovered our independence but later, ont he early XIX century we were invaded (like Spain and many other countries) by The France of Napeleon. With the help of the British, we manage to expulse the French, and later we become independent again. The industrial revolution was full power and also the liberal ideals, leaving monarchy slowly behind.
In 1910 the monarchy was abolished and implemented a republic.
From 1928 untill 1974 we had a closed and dictatorial regime, that supported the Portuguese African colonies. The revolution happened in 1974 and since then Portugal is a democratic country, giving up its colonies.
Of course that I skipped many details. This was just to give you a general idea about our history. I don’t know much, but I think I know enough to enjoy a good chat. :-)
Hope you’ll spend some great days here,
Rui

Hi Alex,
Great to know that you’re interested on Portugal History.
Before Portugal was Portugal, we may consider the dinossaurs as the first inhabitants of Iberia Peninsula, around 80 millions years ago. Just opened recently a Dino Park in Lourinhã, to help understand how life was in this period.
Several civilizations lived here through the pre historic period untill the middle age. At Vale do Coa, in the north, is the best place with examples of pre historic drawings. The fenicians were here, the “lusitanos”, the celtics, the romans, the visigotics and the moorish also (between others).
Finally, Portugal become Portugal (but not with the same borders that we know today) by the hand of our first King Afonso Henriques, around the XII century.
Only at the end of the XIV century, Portugal finally interiorized its national spirit after the battle of Aljubarrota, rulling then the dinisty of Avis, leaded by King John I.
At the XV Century Portugal started the famous period of expansion and Discoveries. During the XVI century Portugal was the king of the oceans and one of the most respected countries in the world, with a vast empire wich included the presence in Africa, India, China and Brazil, between others... In Lisbon you find some monuments that are connected with that period, like for example the Belem Tower or Jeronimos Monastere.

I need to continue on the next message because I am not allowed to write more than 1500 charecters.
