We were lucky to have Joao take a couple of Australians to see Tapada and Mafra for a full day outing. We were picked up without fuss at out Lisbon apartment and we must say he drove very responsibly so we felt very much at ease! As well as the main attractions Joao had some quirky little places to drop by to add to the experience. We had a sumptuous "typical' lunch at a place we would never have tracked down ourselves. Our main aim was to see the Palace at Mafra (the name-sake of my hometown Maffra in Australia) which is a remarkable building, again with its own character and stories. Joao had been an excellent and attentive host with broad interests and knowledge and we will look forward to more adventures, meals and story sharing with him.

Highlights

Take a train ride through Tapada Nacional de Mafra to see unique animals and plants

Watch a birds of prey show

Enjoy a meal at a famous local restaurant

Explore the opulence of Mafra National Palace on a guided tour

Description

We depart Lisbon to Mafra where we will begin our tour at the Tapada Nacional de Mafra, which is an area of protected natural forest that’s home to wild boar and red deer. Here you will take a train ride through the forest to see all the animals and plants.

After the train ride you’ll have the chance to see a birds of prey show and even interact with eagles and owls if you wish! This is particularly fun for kids!

We then head to João da Vila Velha in Mafra, a very famous restaurant in the area with exceptional and varied dishes. You’ll be able to choose something very delicious from the menu.

After lunch, you’ll go on a guided visit to Mafra National Palace where you’ll be blown away by the wealth and luxury of the monarchy.

This palace is one of the most beautiful and magnificent in Portugal and it was the last residence of the King of Portugal before the establishment of the Republic on Oct 5th 1910.
