Lisbon Fado Tour

Fado means destiny, fate. It's characterized by heartfelt tunes and lyrics infused with a sense of fatefulness and longing to which we use the word saudade to characterize it. Besides attending a Fado concert, you'll be taken on a 30 minute walking tour through the alleys of Mouraria and Alfama.
Duration 4 hours
Private tour pricing from 39 EUR per person
Group tour available in English, Portuguese
Nowhere in the description is it mentioned that this tour is operated out of a hostel. If I’d known that I would never have booked it. If you’re under 21 and travelling on minimum budget it would probably be okay. Not even the local taxi driver could find the address and then when I finally got there I was told to sit outside at a picnic table and wait. Absolutely no organisation, staff were dismissive and quite rude. The tour “guide” spoke to his mates in Portuguese all the time despite the fact that everyone who paid to be there were clearly non locals. The food was unnecessary and not very good. I left after 45 minutes as the prospect of spending any further time with the lack of organisation and the guide was not acceptable. Best part - they paid for my taxi home.

Highlights

You don't need to understand portuguese to understand Fado.

Description

Fado is a portuguese word which means fate, destiny. It’s also the name of Lisbon’s most famous musical genre, “the song of Lisbon”, characterised by mournful tunes and grief-laden, soulful lyrics that transmit a strong feeling of longing and nostalgia. In this tour you will be able to experience it firsthand at a traditional fado restaurant.

We will start our Fado tour by wandering through the alleys and windy streets of old Lisbon on a small walking tour through Mouraria and Alfama, where you can get to know the working class neighborhoods and streets where Fado was born. Our guide will explain to you the history and the cultural importance of Fado, and how it shaped mentalities in Portugal and the portuguese own sense of identity.
We'll end the tour at a traditional Fado house where we'll listen to the heartfelt melodies of Fado. Lose yourself in the atmosphere and mood of this typical Portuguese music genre played by the Portuguese guitar and characterized by mournful, heartbreaking lyrics. While you enjoy the music, we will also provide you with a typical Portuguese dinner. Homemade food, portuguese wine, and an amazing environment are the keys to any good Portuguese evening
