We’ll begin our tour in Alfama, the oldest district in Lisbon. Here, the cobblestone streets will welcome you as old shopkeepers lean out of their windows and breathe in the fresh sea air. Snap some photos of the quaint buildings before we move on to Rossio Square in the city’s historic centre.
I’ll lead you through the history of Lisbon, sharing stories of its rise to fame in the 15th and 16th centuries, when explorers set out on maritime conquests. This Golden Age of Portugal is reflected in the architecture.
Our next stop will be the Jerónimos Monastery (closed on Mondays) to admire the extravagant Manueline architectural style that came to define the city. You’ll also get the chance to experience the wonders of the Belém area, with a stop at the Belém Tower. This UNESCO-listed site was the point of departure for the sailors destined for greatness. Here, you can also see the Monument to the Discoveries.
