We had never been to Lisbon and were looking for some help in where to go and what to see. We were extremely fortunate to come across Paolo Cohelo. We had a day and a half to discover Lisbon before boarding a cruise. Paolo met us at the airport with plenty of room for all the baggage six people can produce, took us to the hotel, and waited for us to get settled before setting out for a virtually flawless tour of the environs of Lisbon. We were dazzled by his comprehension of all things Portuguese. Paulo is a licensed tour professional who speaks perfect English, German, and Portuguese and is a wizard in making his way around the serpentine roads (pathways?) of Lisbon. You simply can't go wrong in selecting Paolo as your guide in Portugal.

Description

This extended half-day tour gives you the chance to discover Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, a city that has been populated by many civilisations across the centuries: Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and finally the Portuguese who took it from the Moors in 1147.

After driving across the 25 de Abril Bridge (the “Golden Gate” of Europe) spanning the Tejo River, we’ll stop at the Cristo Rei ("Christ the King") monument. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to take the elevator to the top for breathtaking views of the city and the Tejo River (at your own expense). We can then either explore the historical centre and see the romantic side of the capital at Rossio Square, or visit some of the city’s spectacular viewpoints.

In the famous Belém district, we’ll visit the UNESCO-listed Jerónimos Monastery (closed on Mondays) and stop briefly at the Belém Tower. Another UNESCO-listed site, it was the point of departure for several Portuguese maritime explorations. Here, you can also see the Monument to the Discoveries, which was built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.
