Poppies in East London has been a popular spot, although its a bit more expensive. The best places are the ones that are in the local less commercialised shops. They might look a bit dingy in comparison to other places, but they are the best.

The Golden Hinde in Marylebone is a perennial favorite although if you really want fish & chips(in the greater London area) then your best bet is the Golden Chippy which is slightly off tge beaten path in Greenwich. Makes for a great day out celebrating all things Navel!

Honestly you'd be hard pressed to find bad fish & chips in London. Agree with the below regarding Poppies, while not the most authentic London-feeling place (it's a bit chain like), it has amazing fish & chips.

Lots of places - for good food & a fun Rock and Roll diner vibe try Poppies in Camden. Honestly though the best places for fish and chips in the UK are our seaside towns - ask for the shop where the fish is fresher than fresh!
the best place is the local one in your neighbourhood outside of central london! well, you asked. where will you be staying?

for a central-ish one i go to Kennedy's of Goswell Road (Clerkenwell). I hear Masters Superfish at 191 Waterloo Rd is amazing but have never been.

poppie's is expensive and disappointing but only when you've had the local, cheaper, and better one! otherwise it's a safe bet.

The Seashell in Lissome Grove. Operated for 60 years. Well recommended. I have actually seen Pop stars queueing up outside. Proper restaurant, though you cannot book a table ! Obviously takeaway as well. No licence, but you can purchase wine locally and hand it in at the door while you are in the queue. They will chill and serve it to you at no charge when you reach your table.
Highly recommended on Trip Advisor
