The Mayflower pub is a lovely traditional pub on a site that dates back to the 1500's, with fabulous river views over the Thames and Tower Bridge! It has a lovely history to it! It also does really good traditional British food (book in advance as it can get busy). Really nice to go for a Sunday Roast.

I've been to a few. Marksman is certainly very popular and I must go myself one day. If you Google best gastropubs you won't be disappointed. I recently went to Hawksmoor (Spitalfields - there are three branches, I think) and absolutely loved every mouthful. They have a restaurant and a bar. Tell us where you end up.

London is rather large and each area brings with it a different pub experience. You may want to refine your choice of area. Otherwise, I can speak for some favourite "gastro" pubs in East London. The Marksman probably has one of the most interesting menus, but I prefer The Cat & Mutton, Prince Arthur and — perhaps less Gastro — the White Hart Brew Pub and Hand Of Glory.
