Can you recommend any bars with live jazz or blues music? I am looking for a small smoky place rather than a concert hall ;)

If you are looking for a more speakeasy type of place, there is a spot called Varnish in DTLA that is behind a restaurant. They have more local artists that come through but still a really great intimate spot and they have amazing cocktails as well!

The Baked Potato in Hollywood (on Cahuenga Blvd) is what your are looking for. Tiny place where you will see world-class jazz players, or the best studio musicians in L.A. jamming on blues, fusion, or rock. It won't be smoky though -- no venues in L.A. will be, because there is no smoking allowed in any L.A. nightspots.

Haha, thank you! I am not even a smoker myself, just have this romantic idea of "real" jazz club from movies :D
I agree with Rob and Gina, Harvelle's and the Baked Potato are great venues for jazz shows. There is another club that's been around for decades called The Mint (on Pico Blvd.) They have jazz shows there as well as blues, latin, etc. You can check their website to see who is playing. Have fun!

Thank you!
The Blue Whale is a sort of "underground" room in Little Tokyo that has great jazz. It's in a strip mall called Weller Court on the third floor.

The Living Room is a small room on Crenshaw with solid blues but it depends on what day you go.

If you're looking for something more swanky, Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood and the Gallery Bar and Cognac Room in the Millenium Biltmore Hotel are solid spots with decent food.

I love going to the Dresden Room in Los Feliz, for standards and jazz performed by Marty and Elaine, the cute old couple from the movie Swingers.

Absolutely! The best place in my opinion is called The Baked Potato. Many great jazz & blues artists have played there. Is it a very tiny place. It is located in San Fernanado Valley/Hollywood. Absolutely one of the best places for live music!

Absolutely! The best place in my opinion is called The Baked Potato. It's not directly in Los Angeles, it is in San Fernando Valley/Hollywood. It's very small and many jazz and blues artists have played there. It's an absolute gem!
