Manchester was the first industrial city in the world. Some of it isn't pretty but it is crucial. The Science and Industry Museum is large and includes the world's very first passenger railway station (1830) - almost unaltered. Football started in this area and the National Football Museum should be seen. The 19th century buildings are magnificent and ooze money. The town hall is a grade one listed building - if it's open look inside the entrance too. The cathedral area is worth a look - this is the original core of Manchester where the castle was. The castle has been demolished except for the buildings that make up Chethams School - you can't go in but you can see these medieval buildings through the entrance. The two big football stadiums are a walk away - only go if you are a footy fan. The City stadium is closest to the centre. If you go that way you pass the factories on Ancoats - very austere but very important - they were the template for the industrialisation of much of Europe and America and date from about 1820.
