Mosquée de la Koutoubia

Why locals love it

The beautiful Koutoubia Mosque is the most important mosque in all of Marrakech. The call to prayer can be heard from the tall minaret 5 times every day, and the pretty exterior is very photogenic. For local Muslims, it is a strong religious symbol, as well as being one of the main landmarks in Marrakech. There are nice gardens and ruins too.

Why you should visit it

You can get a sense of the local religion and culture by watching people coming and going, as well as hearing the song-like sound of the azan. You can take nice photos. Non-Muslims cannot go inside, but Muslim travellers are free to look around inside and pray.

Special tip

To the side, through the ruined archway, you can go underground into the old wash room. It isn't signposted and is easy to miss.
