Bois Cheri Tea Factory

Bois Cheri is a working tea estate, factory and museum on the Route du The in southern Mauritius, part of the Domaine de Bois Cheri run by Groupe Saint Aubin. Established in 1892, it was the first tea plantation on the island and remains one of its largest producers, with plantations covering roughly 250 hectares. Guided tours run through the production stages, picking, withering, fermentation, drying, sieving and packaging, followed by an on-site museum documenting the history of the industry in Mauritius. Tours end with a tasting of several varieties at Le Chalet de Bois Cheri, a pavilion on high ground overlooking the plantation, and an adjoining restaurant serves Mauritian lunch dishes. The estate opens daily including public holidays from 9am to 5pm, with factory tours running until mid-afternoon. Live processing is only visible on production days, which vary by season, so anyone travelling specifically to see the machinery working should confirm in advance. Admission is charged, with reduced rates for children.
