Why locals love it

Located within the Bambou Mountains north of Mahebourg, la Vallée de Ferney is a natural reserve designed to preserve the native forest of Mauritius and its unique biodiversity. Locals have fought relentlessly to prohibited the government to build infrastructures that could disrupt its ecosystem.

Why you should visit it

Visiting the reserve costs about Rs600 (EUR13/USD15) with a guide, which is highly recommended in order to distinguish the diverse species. The tour, including lunch at the Ferney Lodge, costs around Rs1,000 (EUR26/USD29). Each dime spent goes to the Ferney Committee for preserving the reserve.

Special tip

Ask the guide to show you the kestrel, the endemic Mauritian bird that only lives in this forest.
