Former Gaol is Now a Museum

Why locals love it

Australia's most famous outlaw bushranger and national hero Ned Kelly was hanged here. It is also widely considered to be haunted. The Old Melbourne Gaol used to be the prison and execution spot for dozens of criminals in Melbourne's early history. Now a museum, you can step inside the cells and see the conditions of Melbourne's criminal past.

Why you should visit it

Melbourne has always had a link with crime, from the fist convict settlers to the more recent gangland killings. The Old Melbourne Gaol was the likeliest destination for criminals in the city's early history, and today you can "get arrested" in a role-play game and see what the experience would have felt like.

Special tip

There is a joint-entry ticket with the Polly Woodside museum that is cheaper than buying tickets to both attractions separately.
