Hi everyone over there in Melbourne "gday". Some years ago (mid to late 1980's)whilst working in Australia I was forunate enough to spend time in Melbourne and stayed on the coast during my stays. The question I have is can anyone give me details of the place I stayed. My memories are a little vague but here goes. The hotel was on the coast, I can remember a fun fair next to a restaurant that was on a galleon the hotel was within 5-10 minutes walk from these there was also a small church between the hotel and the fun fair, I think the hotel was only two possibly three stories high. I have looked on Google earth but as yet been unable to find anything that might be where I stayed. Here's hoping someone reading this can help, fingers crossed.

All the best Terry Barrett, Peterborough UK.

Hi Terry, will that be Cosmopolitan Hotel in St Kilda? It's in walking distance to Luna Park which could be the fun fair in your memory, and built in 80's, not a high building, 3 levels I think. And there is a small church between Carlisle St and Luna Park。

Hi Diana that hat sounds just the place have happy memories of my time there
I think it was the Diplomatic Hotel in Acland St, now residential apartments, it was closer to the Fitzroy St end on the East side of the street. I knew the hotel & the owners at the time. Fairly certain the Church is still there

I think Diana has been spot on
I would imagine that the hotel you are talking about has been demolished and a new shiny one developed. There are many hotels in Melbourne that are of a good standard. I suggest you put "accommodation - St Kilda Vic" into your search engine and have a look at those hotels.

Hope this helps

Thanks for advice
My best guesses would be Williamstown (Hobsons Bay) or St Kilda. I’m leaning more toward St Kilda which has Luna Park, lots of churches (strange for a red light area?) and The Espy (The Esplanade Hotel) which was popular in the 80’s. I’ve tried to research a floating restaurant in both places but unfortunately such businesses come and go quickly. Both areas have many many restaurants and piers and marinas. Go online for both places to see if any of the available photos ring a bell for you. Cheers Brian

If it was a red light district I was not aware all I can remember my walks in the evening and weekends were in a very quite area.
OK, cross out both St Kilda and Williamstown. Try Port Melbourne. It has pubs, churches, piers, trams and restaurants. Do you remember if the Westgate Bridge was nearby? Half hour by trams would put you around this area.

If I remember right the tram which was a historical one took about 30 mims to the city.
Hello Terry, was it St Kilda? There is a permanent fun fair there called ’Lina Park’
St kilda is very close to melbourne on the bay.
Or are you talking about the coast as in Torquey past Geelong?

Not sure sorry to say other than I think it was a bay.
