What'd be the best way to get to Key West? By driving or doing a 1-day tour?

We're drivers under 25 of age, meaning that renting a car would be expensive. I'm not sure if spending 6 hours in Key West would be enough and we want to be able to enjoy ourselves without time restrictions.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First check what is cheaper overall and what is actually worth it.

A tour would be nice if you want avoid renting a car and if you're okay with scheduled time in key west. But because you said you don't want to be pressed with time then driving seems like the better choice.
. Going to key west with a car instead of going on a tour will give you more flexibility in time you spend there.

So you have to ask yourself what is more important time or money.

Time? Rent a car
Money? There are other types of transportation other than renting a car. Of course, renting a car is the most flexible. But you can also take public transportation which might be cheaper. Uber can also be an option and you split the cost amongst the people you are going with.

Best of luck!

Thank You so much Taty! I'll have to talk to my friend about this. Also, how many days do people usually spend in Key West?
Hi Rachel,

It all depends on how many people you are to share the cost of the car. If you want to enjoy yourselves without time restrictions I would spend the night in Key West. One day tour is exhausting and it is a long way to spend only 6 hours.

The most beautiful part of going to Key West is making little stops in the way and enjoy the trip on a convertible if possible. For example Bahia Honda Natural Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the way, it is worth it to stop to do some kayaking or similar activity.

I also found a bus company in case you are interested in this option. I hope this information help.

Don't do a day trip if you can avoid it, spend the night. Key West has great bars and the drive is long. There is a bus to Key West from Miami

Key West is about 3 hours from Miami, I suggest you rent a car and stay one night, there are several places on the way that deserve attention. Ms Mac in Key Largo, Keys Fisheries in Marathon (they get the stone crabs for Joe Stone Crabs) and there is a cute nice restaurant called Square Grouper in Cudjoe Key (30 min from Key West), drive take your time and enjoy the lay back groove of the keys. BTW if you have the time stop in Bahia Honda just after the 7 mile bridge... Nice beach.
Enjoy
