The magnificent archway was built to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911 when they arrived to Bombay for the first time. Today it serves a memento of colonial era.The Gateway is synonymous with Mumbai and millions visit it every year.
The Gateway is a fine example of Indo-sacarenic style, also it serves a jetty point for boarding ferries. The whole square in front of the monument has a magical feel, a slight feeling of peace in an otherwise fast paced city. Close to monument is the iconic Taj Mahal Hotel (a masterpiece in itself) and Colaba causeway (street shopping! yay!).
Eat at Cafe Leopold/Cafe Mondegar. Take Jetty and explore Elephanta Caves.
