Easy access to things to do in/around Munich?

I will be in Munich with my fiance, the week of Sept 24th, primarily for Oktoberfest, but also to take in some other sights. We are leaning towards not renting a car while we're there, and just depending on public transportation. The one thing we definitely want to do, besides Oktoberfest, is a trip to Neuschwanstein castle. How easy is this to do via public transport from Munich?

What else is there to do/see in Munich? Are there other popular things to see/do just outside of Munich that would be easy to do via public transport?

As far as Oktoberfest goes, is there an entry fee? Or can you just walk in, and then you just pay for whatever you want to eat/drink while there?

Thanks for your help in advance. Can't wait for this trip!

hings to do: Have a walk at Olympia Park, and get up the tower for an amazing panoramic view on the mountains and a romantic moment at the Restaurant 181 (15 min from our apartment). Have a walk in the city center from Karlsplatz Stachus until Isartor and get up the stairs into the tower of “Alter Peter” you will see Munich, after go to the food market Viktualienmarkt if there is nice weather have a beer there in the “biergarten”. Next to it there will be a hall called Eataly in Schrannenhalle with a lot of nice Italian food.
From Odeonsplatz, have a walk in the famous Englischer Garten (the biggest park in the world inside a city, bigger than Central Park in New York). The biergarten Chinesischer Turm is a must in order to have a break during your walk. If you like art culture and history go until Prinzregenstrasse, where you will find modern art museum, if you continue a bit further you will find the surfers training on an artificial wave at the Eisbach. Not far from there have a drink at the famous goldy Goldene bar.
Nymphenburger Schloss it is a nice castle, built from the same king “Ludwig II” who built as well the Castle Neuschwanstein. If you like cars the BMW Welt & Museum are close to the apartment. Everybody that loves football (soccer game) check out Allianz Arena and check events in Munich, there is always something going on (check the websites of FC Bayern, 1860 München…).
