There is no direct train to Grand Central Station from JFK. Take the air train get off at the Jamaica Station stop. Follow signs to E train (you will be looking for the direction toward World Trade Center) Once you are heading in the right direction you get off at Lexington/53rd Street Station. Follow signs to the DOWNTOWN 4, 5, or 6 train, all of them stop at Grand Central Station (42nd street). There will be stairs -- no elevators or escalators. But if you follow the signs for the downtown #4, 5, or 6, you'll be ok. Be prepared for delays and carrying your luggage around.

If you make a mistake and stay on the E train (or the A train) they both go to 42nd street but on the other side of town -- not Grand Central.

So you would have to go outdoors and try to transfer to a bus to grand central. The buses go across 42nd street and you would need to exchange your metro ticket for a bus ticket using the outdoor machines. DON'T miss the Lexington/53rd street stop! Easier to hail a cab if you end up on the west side of 42nd street....

Thank you these directions seem fairly easy to follow. My granddaughter will be thrilled to ride the train
Take the AirTrain from the airport terminals to Jamaica station. From there you can connect to the Subway (follow signs from AirTrain to Subway). Take the E train to manhattan and exit at 53rd/Lexington stop. Transfer there to the downtown 6 train - one stop to Grand Central. AIrTrain is $5, and subway is $2.75. You can buy a single ticket when you exit the AirTrain at Jamaica.

I second this. Also, depending on when you land, the trip should take anywhere between 1 1/4 hours-1 hour 45 min.

Thank you! Our hotel is actually in the UN Plaza. The plan was to walk from Grand Central to our hotel. Would another stop make more sense and get us closer to our hotel?
Grand Central is as close as you can get on the subway. it's a few long blocks from GC to UN Plaza. Not terribly far, but consider a car from GC if bad weather.

Thank you so much Paul!! The trip to our hotel was perfect with your great directions. Laura
As everyone said below. If you just want to get to Grand Central the most convenient way possible, you can just take the direct shuttle service. That will help you avoid the trouble of getting lost at the various transfer points. Plus it'll be faster and comfortable.

Hi Laura!

The easiest way to do this and not take so much time would be to take the Airtrain to Jamaica. From there, get a ticket for the Long Island Railroad to Penn Station. From penn, you can catch the 1,2,3,A,C, or E trains to times square and transfer to the 7 to get to Grand Central

Hi Laura me again, first poster. depending on your luggage etc., , you could actually walk from the Lexington 53rd avenue station to UN Plaza, about 15 minures. or...at Lex 53 station, get out and use metro card for a free transfer to a downtown bus 🚌 that gets off lex and 42 and walk from there... waiting time for a bus might be a factor. Consider the trade offs: skipping the suway transfer to grand central (where youd be walking and climbing stairs) or do your walking directly from lex 53 stop, it all depnds on your luggage.... and the westher..enjoy NY!
