Why locals love it

This is the most significant and impressive of the three gates on the city's magnificent venetian walls. Originally known as Porta Guiliana in honour of Giulio Savorgano the engineer that designed and erected the walls.

Famagusta Gate is the largest and most beautiful of the three gates of the Venetian walls of Nicosia. The Gate was known in the beginning as "Porta Giuliana", named in favor of the architect of the walls, Giulio Savorgnan. It used to connect the walled city to the road leading to the largest port of the time, Famagusta, thus it was named Famagusta Gate. In 1981 the Gate was restored and since then it is used as one of the Municipality's cultural centres. The imposing facade of the Gate - worth taking some pics - can be found from the inside of the walls. The area around the Gate is also quite fascinating were a theatre, restaurants, bars, cafes and another cultural center can be found.
