Eating out in Oslo is not the culinary adventure it is in other European capitals. While the food is becoming more diverse as Oslo becomes more multicultural, a lot of the outrageous flavours found in ethnic cooking are still toned down for the Norwegian palate. If you go to an Indian restaurant and want your meal to have a bit of a kick, make sure you ask for it Indian spicy and not just spicy. This combined lack of flavour and higher prices often leads visitors to be disappointed.
Norway has some of the best, fresh fish in the world. While you may have to pay a little more during your stay, the quality of the food and the pleasure you get from it will exceed your expectations. Try all the Scandanavian dishes you can. A summer favourite is fresh shimp (which you have to peel yourself) with mayo and lemon on fresh bread and white wine steamed muscles. Kjøttkaker (small hamburgers without the bun) and fresh cod can always be found somewhere. If you are more adventurous, hvalburger (whale burger) can be found at some of the food festivals in the summer. Save the kebab for when you're back home.
