Madeleine Church

Why locals love it

The style of this place is so original that many don’t even realise it’s a church. What’s more, it's so monumental that people don't dare to enter. In 1806 Napoleon ordered its construction as a "Temple to the Glory of the Great Army". This memorial became a church in 1842 after Napoleon’s fall.

Why you should visit it

The architecture is very interesting – this is not your typical Gothic or Roman church. The style is like that of an ancient temple with numerous Corinthian columns. Here you can enjoy many classical music concerts, sometimes for free, sometimes for €20–50. I was once lucky enough to attend the philharmonic orchestra’s rehearsal.

Special tip

It’s the perfect place to get some peace and escape the noisy traffic.
