Montmartre

Why locals love it

Montmartre is one of the most beautiful places in Paris to wander. Although parts of it are touristy, exploring the area behind the Sacre Coeur allows you to take a step back in time with its winding streets, wild gardens and "folies" that birthed the 19th century Impressionist movement.

Why you should visit it

Down the hill you’ll find Paris' only remaining vineyard, planted in the 1930s to prevent urban encroachment, which still has a harvest party every year. You can also find a number of small museums such as the Museum of Montmartre housed in the oldest building in the neighbourhood – la Maison du Bel Air.

Special tip

As you wander down the hill, see if you can spot some fantastic homes with gargoyles, fairies and magical beasts carved into them – the “folies”.
